Rohingya repatriation: Burma will take back only 559 out of 8032 people

Mishelle,Staff Reporter|RNTv:

Around 12 hundred thousand Rohingya refugees fled from Burma have been registered from all 13 makeshift settlements of Ukhiya and Teknaf in Cox’sBazar. And, under the Repatriation Agreement, the Burmese government wants to return 559 Rohingy (first 374 after 185) from the list of 8032 people in the first phase. Burma informs that these Rohingyas are the original residents of Arakan, without giving any decision regarding the return of the rest of the people.

Burma has repatriated not a single person from the list of 8,032 people of Rohingya repatriation. Meanwhile, Bangladesh has prepared a list of more than 10 thousand people. The list will be handed over to the Joint Working Group formed for repatriation in the next meeting, said the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry. Despite the denial for so long, this time Burma has agreed to include the United Nations in the repatriation process.

Burma said that these 559 people will be able to return at any time. But it did not specify the exact date.

The question are arising whether the country is sincere about taking Rohingyas back or not. Analysts say, as far as the situation is considered and it seems from its activities that the country is not sincere about the situation.
